Horrific Bitcoin Wrench Attack in Canada
A brutal home invasion in British Columbia has exposed the dark reality of cryptocurrency-related violence, with victims subjected to waterboarding, sexual assault, and torture as attackers demanded access to their Bitcoin holdings. The April 2024 attack resulted in the theft of approximately $1.6 million in cryptocurrency after four men targeted a family they believed held substantial digital assets.
The Attack Details and Methods
The assailants employed sophisticated tactics to gain entry to the victims’ home, with two men posing as Canadian Post workers requesting a signature for a fake package. Once inside, they were joined by two additional accomplices, and the family—a husband, wife, and daughter—were immediately restrained with zip ties.
Violent Interrogation Tactics
The attackers employed extreme measures to coerce the family into surrendering their cryptocurrency. The husband and wife were waterboarded, while the husband was threatened with genital mutilation if he didn’t provide access to his funds. The violence escalated as the assailants sought to maximize their illicit gains.
Sexual Assault and Humiliation
The daughter was forced to remove her clothing while the attackers recorded multiple videos. She was physically assaulted and compelled to repeat explicit phrases as part of the psychological torture designed to break the family’s resistance.
Criminal Demands and Outcome
The attackers initially demanded 200 Bitcoin (approximately $17.8 million at current values) after learning about the victim’s crypto investment success within the Chinese community. They later reduced their demand to 100 BTC but ultimately drained nearly all the victims’ crypto accounts, making off with approximately $1.6 million.
Legal Consequences and Rising Trend
One of the four attackers, Tsz Wing Boaz Chan, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, unlawful confinement, and sexual assault. He received a seven-year prison sentence earlier this month. This case highlights a disturbing trend in cryptocurrency-related crimes.
Wrench Attacks on the Rise
According to data from Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Casa, documented wrench attacks have more than doubled in 2025, with 60 incidents recorded this year alone. The term “wrench attack” refers to physical assaults where criminals use violence rather than digital methods to steal cryptocurrency.
Recent Similar Incidents
This attack follows a pattern of increasing physical violence targeting crypto holders. Recent cases include a man attempting to extort $11 million from a homeowner and a Chinese investor being kidnapped in Thailand. Earlier this year, a prominent crypto entrepreneur lost a finger during a similar attack.
Security Implications for Crypto Holders
The brutal nature of this attack underscores the importance of operational security for cryptocurrency investors. As digital assets become more valuable, physical security measures are increasingly crucial to protect against such violent crimes. The case serves as a stark reminder that crypto wealth can make holders targets for physical attacks.
