Q1 2026 Earnings: Software Business Shows Strength, But Bitcoin Bleeding Continues

Strategy CEO Phong Le insists the company is more than its Bitcoin balance sheet, but the Q1 numbers tell a mixed story. The enterprise software firm reported $124.3 million in total revenue for Q1 2026, up 11.9% year-over-year from $111.1 million. Gross profit came in at $83.4 million, yielding a 67.1% gross margin.

Revenue and Profitability Metrics

Le highlighted that Q1 was the strongest software quarter in a decade. Software revenue grew 12%, while cloud revenue surged 59%. The company’s controllable margin improved 27%, helping to offset Bitcoin-related operating expenses. These gains suggest the legacy software unit is still a cash cow, but the scale is dwarfed by the cryptocurrency side.

The Bitcoin Conundrum: $12.54B Net Loss and $25.3B Raised

Despite strong operating metrics, Strategy reported a staggering $12.54 billion net loss for Q1, widening dramatically from a $4.22 billion loss in the same period last year. The loss is almost certainly driven by impairment on its massive Bitcoin holdings. As of press time, Bitcoin (BTC) trades at $81,005, down significantly from its all-time highs, pressuring the company’s treasury strategy.

The firm raised $25.3 billion in 2025 alone to expand its Bitcoin treasury. That relentless accumulation came at a cost: with current BTC prices, the market value of its holdings likely sits well below the acquisition cost, forcing massive write-downs. Le maintains the focus on growing ‘Bitcoin per share’, but the widening net loss raises questions about sustainability.

Beyond the Balance Sheet: AI and Enterprise Software as a Value Driver

Mosaic AI Platform and Automation

Le unveiled ‘Mosaic’, an AI data foundation that links large language models, hyperscalers, and data warehouses into a secure enterprise layer. The company is also rebuilding internal systems with AI, expecting more automated workflows. This pivot is crucial: without the software business, Strategy’s ability to fund Bitcoin purchases would be severely limited.

The message is clear: Strategy wants investors to see it as a dual-entity – a profitable software firm with a bitcoin-backed balance sheet. But the market’s focus remains on the $12.54B hole. For now, the software unit provides cover, but if Bitcoin prices stay depressed, the narrative could shift from ‘digital asset pioneer’ to ‘leveraged bet gone wrong’.

Market Outlook: Neutral to Bearish on MSTR. The software business is healthy, but the Bitcoin-driven net loss is enormous. Without a BTC price recovery, dilution risks could increase. Watch for BTC support at $80,000 – a break below would amplify pressure on Strategy’s equity.
