The Dawn of AI-Powered Crypto Trading
Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing how we interact with the web, and crypto trading is next in line for transformation. New York-based startup Donut Labs has secured $22 million in funding to develop what it claims is the first AI-powered browser capable of autonomously researching, analyzing, and executing cryptocurrency trades. This significant investment positions the company at the forefront of merging AI technology with cryptocurrency trading infrastructure.
Building the Next Generation Trading Platform
Founded by Chris Zhu, Donut Labs emerged from frustration with existing trading platforms after his team’s TikTok-based application was unexpectedly shut down. “Browsers haven’t really changed in 30 years,” Zhu told Decrypt. “We wanted to build the largest front end on the internet—but do that for crypto.”
The Agentic Browser Revolution
Donut’s AI browser represents a new category of web interaction tools. Unlike traditional browsers, it’s designed to understand user trading context, synthesize data from multiple sources, and perform actions across exchanges—all within the browser environment. The company observed the emerging trend of agentic browsers with launches from OpenAI and Perplexity, but focused specifically on creating one capable of handling complex trading operations.
Security Architecture and Design
Security remains paramount in Donut’s design philosophy. The system employs layered security modeled after Tesla’s self-driving software levels, with tasks ranging from basic research to fully authorized transactions requiring multiple confirmations. “The reason exploits happen in other browsers is because they handle HTML links with not enough security,” Zhu explained.
Advanced Security Measures
To address security concerns, Donut processes authorizations on the backend rather than simulating user clicks. The company partners with key management firm Turnkey to safeguard private keys, ensuring that the AI agent never directly accesses user wallet balances or private information.
How the AI Trading Browser Works
Behind the scenes, Donut utilizes an “open router” system that dynamically selects the appropriate AI model for each task. Lightweight models handle straightforward operations like token swaps, while advanced reasoning systems tackle complex market analysis. The browser’s agents draw liquidity and pricing data from established sources including CoinGecko and Pyth, while custom-built tools enable automated execution and research capabilities.
The Future of Human Traders in an AI World
Will AI browsers render human traders obsolete? Zhu believes the opposite is more likely. “Right now, quants are great at high-frequency trades,” he noted. “But AI browsers know your whole context—they make it easier for you to do what you already do, across the internet.”
AI as a Trading Equalizer
Rather than replacing human traders, Zhu envisions AI becoming an equalizing force in cryptocurrency markets. “Over a long enough time horizon, we do want to get to the point where it’s just me, myself, and my hundred quants,” he said. “But the strategies will be unique to each person.”
Investment and Market Position
The $22 million funding round was led by prominent venture capital firms including Bitkraft Ventures, Sequoia China, Sky9 Ventures, Matrix Partners, Makers Fund, and Altos Ventures. This substantial backing positions Donut Labs among the early leaders in the race to redefine how artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency trading converge.
Product Roadmap and Vision
Donut Labs plans to release a comprehensive suite of products including a standalone browser, browser extension, web application, and mobile app. This multi-platform approach aims to cover “the full life cycle of your trading career,” according to Zhu. As AI systems evolve from simple chatbots to fully autonomous tools, browsers may become the primary interface for both human and machine activity online.
Zhu concludes with an optimistic vision: “Our species is looking for rapid growth. Choosing AI to help us get there is one of the easiest ways to evolve.” For cryptocurrency traders accustomed to automation and market volatility, AI-powered browsers represent the next logical step in trading technology evolution.
