Tether’s Strategic Move into Latin American Markets

Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, has made a significant strategic move by acquiring Parfin, a London- and Rio de Janeiro-based digital asset infrastructure platform. This acquisition represents Tether’s most substantial push into Latin America’s rapidly growing cryptocurrency market, signaling the company’s commitment to expanding its global footprint in emerging financial hubs.

Parfin’s Role in Bridging Traditional and Digital Finance

Parfin specializes in providing institutional-grade crypto custody, asset management, and tokenization solutions to financial institutions across Latin America. The company, which was incubated by Mastercard, has established deep integration with the region’s banking sector, positioning itself as a crucial bridge between traditional finance and blockchain technology.

Institutional-Grade Infrastructure Solutions

Parfin’s platform offers comprehensive digital asset services including custody, tokenization, trading, and asset management solutions specifically designed for institutional clients. This infrastructure will enable Tether to significantly boost USDT adoption among corporate and financial institution users throughout Latin America.

Mastercard Partnership and Client Base

Following its participation in Mastercard’s Start Path program last year, Parfin has built an impressive client portfolio including Banco BV, Núclea, and B3 Digitas. The company’s Rayls platform is currently involved in Brazil’s central bank initiative exploring privacy and scalability solutions for a potential central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Latin America’s Crypto Market Potential

The acquisition comes at a time when Latin America has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing cryptocurrency markets. According to Chainalysis data, the region recorded nearly $1.5 trillion in transaction volume from the start of 2025 through October, with institutional players driving substantial growth.

Market Drivers and Use Cases

Latin American crypto users increasingly rely on stablecoins like USDT for cost-effective cross-border transactions, particularly for remittances. For many in the region, cryptocurrency serves as both a financial tool for reducing transaction costs and a hedge against economic volatility.

Strategic Implications and Future Outlook

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized that the investment reflects the company’s belief in “global, unrestricted access to financial freedom and real-world digital asset use cases.” The acquisition positions Tether to capitalize on Latin America’s growing institutional adoption of blockchain technology while strengthening its stablecoin ecosystem.

Marcos Viriato, CEO of Parfin, noted that Tether’s investment serves as “strong validation of our vision to accelerate the integration of tokenization applications and USDT into our institutional-grade blockchain and digital assets solutions.” This strategic move underscores the increasing convergence between traditional financial infrastructure and decentralized finance in emerging markets.
