Former Rugby Star Faces Crypto Fraud Charges
Former Australian Rugby League star Trent Merrin has been arrested and charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception following allegations of stealing $91,000 (AUD $140,000) in cryptocurrency. The retired footballer, who represented both the Kangaroos and New South Wales Blues during his professional career, was taken into custody at his Barrack Point residence on Tuesday morning.
Police Investigation and Evidence Collection
According to reports from the Sydney Morning Herald, police raided Merrin’s home as part of a year-long investigation into the alleged theft from a 29-year-old man’s cryptocurrency account. Authorities allege that Merrin used deceptive means to transfer funds from the victim’s account without authorization.
Forensic Examination Underway
During the raid, officers seized multiple electronic devices that will undergo comprehensive forensic examination. This digital evidence collection is crucial to the ongoing investigation and could provide key insights into the methods used in the alleged cryptocurrency theft.
Legal Proceedings and Bail Conditions
Merrin was granted conditional bail following his arrest and is scheduled to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on December 3. The case represents one of several high-profile cryptocurrency-related investigations currently underway in Australia.
From Sports Star to Crypto Entrepreneur
Merrin retired from the NRL in 2021 after an impressive 15-year professional career that included 250 first-grade games. Since leaving professional sports, he has actively pursued business ventures in both the cryptocurrency and wellness sectors.
Post-Retirement Business Ventures
His professional profile describes him as a “dedicated entrepreneur and investor with a passion for crypto, blockchain, and the health and wellness industry.” Merrin founded Freeze Yourself in January 2023, a cold plunge therapy service, and operated as an angel investor through Merrin Investments from May 2015 to February 2025.
Australia’s Crackdown on Crypto Crime
Merrin’s arrest comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of cryptocurrency-related crimes in Australia. In July, the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) announced significant updates to its financial crime enforcement priorities.
Regulatory Concerns About Digital Currencies
AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas described the regulatory overhaul as “the most ambitious overhaul of Australia’s anti-money laundering laws in a generation.” Digital currencies have become a particular concern for regulators due to their cross-border capabilities and the ease of instantaneous global transfers, which authorities say make them attractive to financial criminals.
The case against Merrin highlights the growing intersection between professional sports, cryptocurrency investment, and financial crime enforcement in Australia’s evolving digital asset landscape.
