Paradigm Leads $470M Series C for Antares Nuclear

Paradigm has led a $470 million funding round for nuclear startup Antares Nuclear, marking the crypto venture firm’s continued expansion into frontier technologies beyond blockchain. The Series C financing consists of $370 million in equity and $100 million in debt, with Caffeinated Capital co-leading the round. Other participants include Industrious Ventures, Point72 Ventures, and Shine Capital.

Funding Details and Investors

The investment comes just weeks after Paradigm closed its own $1.2 billion fourth fund on July 8, which the firm stated would continue backing crypto while expanding into artificial intelligence, robotics, aerospace, manufacturing, and other emerging technologies. Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang and managing partner Alana Palmedo emphasized the firm would invest “first in crypto” while supporting founders building complementary hardware and software technologies.

Targeting Military Reactor Deployments

Antares Nuclear has developed a compact small modular reactor (SMR) capable of generating between 100 kilowatts and 1 megawatt of electricity—enough to power roughly 750 homes. Rather than targeting commercial utilities first, the startup is focused on U.S. government customers.

Pentagon Program and Demonstration Milestone

Antares is one of three finalists selected for the Pentagon’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program, which plans to evaluate SMRs at Air Force bases in Colorado and Montana. On June 4, the company’s demonstration reactor, known as Mark-0, reached criticality at Idaho National Laboratory, confirming that the reactor sustained a controlled nuclear chain reaction. The company expects to bring its first electricity-producing reactor online next year, with deployments at U.S. military installations targeted for 2028. Antares’ reactor uses TRISO fuel, which surrounds uranium particles with multiple carbon and ceramic layers designed to contain radioactive material under high temperatures, paired with gas or molten salt cooling systems.

Nuclear Investment Surges Alongside AI Demand

Interest in advanced nuclear companies has accelerated as hyperscale data center construction and broader electrification drive demand for dependable power generation. According to TechCrunch, X-energy completed a $1 billion initial public offering in April, while Radiant Energy, Standard Nuclear, and Last Energy each secured over $100 million in funding since December. Artificial intelligence is a key driver, with large AI models requiring data centers that consume immense amounts of electricity. Paradigm has identified AI as a priority sector, and its internal projects include EVMbench (developed with OpenAI to evaluate AI agents for smart contract security) and continued work on open-source blockchain infrastructure like Foundry and Reth.

Commercial Hurdles Remain

Despite rising investment, commercial deployment of advanced nuclear reactors faces challenges. Developers grapple with limited domestic supply chains and difficulties scaling manufacturing. Factory-built reactors could eventually lower costs, but benefits typically take years to materialize. Lazard estimates that electricity from first-generation SMRs could cost about $214 per megawatt-hour, placing them above most newly built power plants except the highest-cost gas turbine facilities.
