Robinhood Accelerates Crypto Expansion with Major New Features
Robinhood is making a decisive push to become a global digital finance leader, announcing a comprehensive suite of new cryptocurrency products and services. The financial services platform is expanding beyond its traditional brokerage roots, introducing Ethereum and Solana staking, perpetual futures trading in the EU, and over 1,000 tokenized U.S. stocks. This strategic move comes as Robinhood reports $232 billion in crypto trading volume over the past year, with $51 billion in assets under custody, signaling crypto’s central role in its growth strategy.
New Product Rollout: Staking, Futures, and Tokenized Assets
The company is launching a multi-pronged product expansion. For U.S. customers, staking for Ethereum (ETH) and Solana (SOL) goes live on Tuesday, December 9, starting in New York with plans for nationwide rollout pending regulatory approval. The platform is also introducing new fee tiers for high-volume traders and enhancements to its crypto trading API to attract more sophisticated users.
European Market Strategy: Leverage and 24/7 Trading
In Europe, Robinhood is significantly broadening its perpetual futures offering. New trading pairs with up to 7x leverage are being added for major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL), building on its initial Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) futures launch. The company stated it designed this offering by analyzing customer behavior, market standards, and the regulatory environment, aiming to provide advanced traders with both flexibility and necessary guardrails.
Introducing Tokenized Stocks and Money Market Funds
Also launching for EU users is access to over 1,000 tokenized U.S. equities, enabling 24/7 trading of stocks like Apple or Tesla. Furthermore, Robinhood is integrating tokenized money market funds managed by established partners like J.P. Morgan. This creates a more comprehensive, all-in-one investment experience within its mobile app, which remains the primary access point in Europe for now.
The Robinhood Chain: Building an On-Chain Ecosystem
Perhaps the most ambitious development is the official unveiling of the Robinhood Chain, an EVM-compatible scaling network project first hinted at in July. Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood Crypto’s SVP and GM, emphasized the importance of an EVM-compatible chain and the vision of “putting stock on-chain” to dismantle financial walled gardens. This proprietary blockchain infrastructure aims to power its broader ecosystem and could fundamentally reshape how traditional assets are traded and custodied.
Global Growth and Competitive Positioning
This expansion marks a shift for Robinhood, which has historically lagged behind giants like Coinbase and Binance in features like staking and derivatives. The company is actively pursuing global growth, with recent reports indicating moves to enter the Indonesian market via partnerships with licensed local players. As regulatory landscapes evolve, Robinhood’s integrated approach—combining crypto, stocks, and now blockchain infrastructure—positions it uniquely in the race to define the future of digital finance.
