U.S. Homeland Security Investigates Bitcoin Miner Manufacturer Bitmain
The Department of Homeland Security has been conducting a federal investigation into Chinese cryptocurrency mining equipment manufacturer Bitmain over potential national security concerns, according to a Bloomberg report citing seven anonymous sources familiar with the matter.
Operation Red Sunset: The Federal Probe
The investigation, codenamed “Operation Red Sunset,” has focused on whether Bitmain’s hardware could be remotely controlled for espionage purposes or even to undermine the U.S. power grid. The probe reportedly involved discussions at the White House’s National Security Council, beginning under the Biden administration and continuing into the early months of the Trump administration.
Senate Intelligence Committee Findings
The DHS investigation coincided with separate inquiries by the Senate Intelligence Committee, which released a report in July concluding that Bitmain’s machines “can be forced by the PRC to turn over data in accordance with China’s national security law.”
Backdoor Concerns and Previous Actions
The Senate report referenced a 2023 investigation that discovered potential “backdoors” in Bitmain equipment dating back to 2017. Federal suspicion of Chinese mining equipment predates the current administration, with President Biden issuing an order in May 2024 prohibiting MineOne Partners from operating a mining facility near Francis E. Warren Air Force Base due to “significant national security concerns” about foreign-sourced equipment.
Industry Experts Question Remote Control Feasibility
While security concerns about foreign-made hardware are common across the tech industry, mining experts suggest that remotely controlling Bitcoin mining machines would be difficult to accomplish without detection.
Technical Limitations of Mining Hardware
Nishant Sharma, founder of mining consultancy BlocksBridge, explained that mining machines are “purpose-built to do one thing, mine Bitcoin,” and any backdoor would mainly enable minor remote adjustments like switching pools or changing settings. He noted that in large data centers, external interference would be “hard to hide” due to close monitoring of hashrate and network traffic.
Bitmain’s Response and Ongoing Scrutiny
Bitmain has strongly denied the allegations, stating that it “has never engaged in activities that pose risks to U.S. national security” and claiming it has not received any information about federal investigations into its products. Despite these denials, federal customs officials have reportedly stopped and inspected Bitmain equipment at U.S. ports on multiple occasions, with investigators also examining potential tariff violations.
The ongoing scrutiny highlights the complex intersection of cryptocurrency infrastructure, national security, and international technology competition as Bitcoin mining continues to grow in strategic importance.
