Tether Expands Beyond Crypto with Robotics Investment

In a significant move beyond its core stablecoin business, Tether has announced a strategic investment in Italian humanoid robotics startup Generative Bionics. The stablecoin giant participated in a €70 million (approximately $81 million) funding round, joining a growing list of tech and financial firms betting on the future of humanoid robotics. This investment underscores Tether’s broader strategy of funding innovative hardware and infrastructure projects that expand human potential and strengthen global systems.

The Generative Bionics Vision: Physical AI

Generative Bionics, a 2024 spin-out from the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), is developing what it calls “Physical AI” systems. These are humanoid robots designed to seamlessly fuse advanced robotics with artificial intelligence. The company’s mission is to create intelligent robots that collaborate with humans in daily tasks, amplifying cognitive and physical capabilities. With over 60 humanoid prototypes developed during two decades of research at IIT, the startup has a strong foundation, bringing 70 engineers from the institute to commercialize this technology.

Strategic Goals and Market Deployment

Tether’s capital injection is earmarked for critical development phases. The funds will help Generative Bionics complete industrial testing and construct its first production facility. The company is targeting initial deployments in 2026, with plans to debut its first complete humanoid robot at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The target markets are practical and high-demand: manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and retail environments.

Joining a Major Funding Round

Tether was not the only notable investor in this round. The investment was led by the Artificial Intelligence Fund of CDP Venture Capital. Other participants included corporate venture arms from major industry players like AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, and RoboIT. This consortium of backers highlights the cross-industry belief in the commercial viability of humanoid robotics.

Tether’s Diversification Strategy

This investment continues a clear pattern for Tether. While best known for issuing USDT, the world’s largest stablecoin, the company has actively diversified its portfolio into frontier technologies. Past investments have included sustainable Bitcoin mining, alternative financial platforms, and brain-computer interface technology. The move into robotics represents a logical extension of this strategy, focusing on technologies that build tangible, real-world infrastructure.

The Booming Humanoid Robotics Market

Tether’s entry into robotics coincides with a surge of investor interest and capital flowing into the humanoid sector. 2025 has seen several landmark deals, including Figure AI’s $675 million raise at a $2.6 billion valuation and Bedrock Robotics securing $100 million. The financial industry is also taking note, with Roundhill Investments launching a dedicated humanoid robotics ETF in April. Analysts like Morgan Stanley project the market could reach a staggering $154 billion by 2050, driven primarily by demand in logistics and manufacturing to address labor shortages and enhance operational efficiency.

As Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated, “Humanoid robotics and Physical AI represent a powerful evolution in how intelligence and capability operate in the real world.” This investment marks a pivotal moment where the worlds of digital finance and physical automation converge, signaling a future where crypto-native capital actively builds the next generation of intelligent machines.
